Right Place, Right Time

Always carrying a camera does occasionally pay off.I've had a Canon G9 for a few years now that I try to carry with me as much as possible. It's survived (in a lot of cases better than me) being thrown down countless hills, trails and mountains in an easy to reach pocket on my backpack. When I don't take it with me, that's predictably when I'll wish I had it. Those "that's a shot right there" moments have an uncanny knack of presenting themselves when you least expect them.Take an autumn ride round Glentress in the Scottish Borders for example: I've ridden the trails at Glentress countless times and in all weather conditions. I know that when there's an inversion layer sitting in the Tweed Valley the views up top will be fantastic. Getting out the car and starting out in the murky, freezing mist can be grim but, hopefully, as you ride up the through the trees the clouds will start to thin. These are the days that sunlight streams through the tress in sweeping beams that randomly lighting and backlighting the trail and the surrounding forest. There's just you and your bike riding up through the mist. These are, predictably, the days you wish you'd packed a camera.Always carrying a camera does occasionally pay off.
