The Other Iceland

In 2012 my wife and I had a fantastic time touring Iceland in a camper van and a bit later after that broke down, in a Landrover Discovery. With no need to book accommodation initially, we had the freedom to choose our direction of travel once we picked up the camper. Leaving Rejkjavik you can turn right and go down the south coast to the much photographed black beaches and glaciers, or turn left and go up the west and less fashionable coast. We prefer to favour the road less travelled, so we turned left. And what an excellent experience it was. Beautiful unworldly scenery, quiet, peaceful and with little villages offering no more than the essentials (a bar and a little shop).  After the camper was replaced (non-charging battery) by the Discovery, we headed across the highlands to Husavik in the north to do a spot of whale watching and to look at the remarkable landscape at Krafla. Stunning. Here's a taster.
